I've hit a brick wall. Anyone else wish their ancestors had been more creative in naming their children?!?
My grandfather, Walter "Jock" Alexander Buchanan (the third?), shared a name with his father and grandfather. We have been looking for more information on my great, great grandfather for decades. And I would so appreciate if anyone has any leads that can help us solve the riddle.
What do we know: Walter (the first?) married a woman named Robina (b. 24 Nov abt 1875) and they had at least one child, Walter (II?, b. 11 Nov 1897 or 1899), supposedly born in Elgin, Scotland. Walter (II?) served in WW1 in the 4th South African Infantry at Perham Downs in the UK, indicating that he or the family emigrated at some point before 1919. Walter (II?) married Rebecca Silverwood in the Cape in 1929. Rebecca's family we've been able to track branches of to the 12th century.
What we don't know:
- Was Walter (II) really born in Elgin? Did he have siblings? When did he emigrate to the Cape?
- Robina's maiden name, parents' names, place of birth, date of marriage, date of death.
- Walter's (I) parent's names, and any other information about them and their family
What I've tried: All surviving family members have been quizzed ad nauseum, and I've searched on the ScotlandPeople site without success for birth records for Walter (the second) or marriage records for Walter (the first) and Robina. Without the above-mentioned details, I really don't know where else to go. I've also tried about 100 name variations on FamilySearch document searches.
Any leads would be appreciated!
