Hey Wiki community!
I’m not sure if this is acceptable or the place I can ask this! This is going to be long so my apologies.
My family has been trying to break our brick wall for years and just can’t seem to fully get there, I was just wondering if anyone in the community may have a little free time and may be able to help at all. Any info that can steer me in atleast the right direction is so appreciated! I have put the information that myself and others have come across below for any reference.
There has been so many variants of my last name by either hearing it wrong when being written down or misread from how it has been written( I will also put all the variants that I have come across below in the most organized way I can.)
France or Brabant
Jean Baptiste Venedam
Born abt. 1792
A brief part from an article (not sure if this is completely true or not )
- In 1817, two soldiers (likely originally from Belgium), captured by the British during the Napoleonic Wars and imprisoned on Georges Island in Halifax Harbour made their way to Pomquet. They were Jean-Baptiste Reny-Rombaud or Reny-Rimbeau (now Rennie) and Jean-Baptiste Vendome (now Venedam).
- Written record showed Married to Osite Rosia( now Roger) January 15 1822.
- Also believed to be married after to Adelle or Odell Duon/ Duyon
I also have this information below from someone in my extended family who researched him aswell ( which is repeated a little bit & I will sum up the variants of names below still)
Louvain/Leuven in Brabant. It is about 20 km east of Brussel and in Belgium today. "Belgium" as a country did not exist till after Napolean. Earlier, say in the 1600's that region was part of the "Spanish Netherlands" and ruled by the Spanish branch of the Habsburgs, I think. It was after the "War of the Spanish Succession" in the early 1700's that that area became ruled by the Austrian branch of the Habsburgs and was stilled ruled by them in 1789 -- the year of the French Revolution. Between 1789 and 1799 France conquered that area. Napolean was defeated at Waterloo in 1815. So, for that whole time between 1789 and 1815, it probably was not too pleasant living in that area. **************** 27 Census Upper district County of Sidney, Township of St Andrews BATES VINEDOM 1838 Census, Pomquet BATTIST VINADOM 1861 Census BATISTIST VENADUM 1881 Census Dist 21 Antigonish, found under Heatheron, pg 64 or 69 reel 13656 PANS Regisstry of deeds, Book 11, pg 282, 1844, reel 17151l, PANS Land located at Pomquet BATHIST VENADOM Registry of deeds Book 17, pg 801, 1865, reel PANS land at Pomquet to Abraham Landry Registry of deeds, Book 19, pg 449, 1869, reel PANS land at Pomquet to Rev William Chisholm JOHN B VENNADAM **************** Church Records St Croix Parish Pomquet, Antigonish Co., Nova Scotia, Canada L'an Jan 15, 1822 after publication of bands of marriage.
