Do you understand what you actually mean?

Clarification: The scroll element. (Yup, html and css related question This is regarding html and css)

After all the G2G threads that have posted (over the last 6 years), has it been decided whether the wording is not recommended or not allowed?

Two different meanings are implied. Which is it?

"not recommended" vs "not allowed" -- I think you will find it difficult to find anywhere in any of the Users Profile Manager Manual For WikiTree the phrase "not allowed".

While that is true, I've had messages from people on here firmly asserting that is wrong and that such stuff is not allowed, yet the help page (which we like to assume to be correct) only says that it is not recommended.

I mention past G2G threads because I've observed other users raise this very comment of "not recommended" vs "not allowed" (they didn't get a response for the record)
Richard, I'd venture a guess that probably none of us has any clue what you're talking about.  If this is a real question instead of a game, please point to a G2G thread or a help page that would clarify what the issue is.

laugh  Well you have observed a dichotomy between what's in the content of the pages (what is not recommended) vs what is asserted in the G2G forum (what is not allowed) and many would like you to cite instances. Can you do so, a half-dozen or so, just to make it plainer what it is you have observed? laugh

Susan, see my comment below. G2G is simply a discussion forum, and wording is sometimes tweaked or rephrased based on the writer (speaker).

At the end of the day, the Help Pages remain the official guidance, not what is read in G2G.

smiley Well, Steven I know that, and you know that, the Help Manual is the "bible" and he seems to agree -- but, nevertheless, if he is correct about what he has observed, then there is a dichotomy between what is in the Help Manual and what is being said in G2G forum.

No sense telling me what I know. I'm curious about what he knows. This discussion was provoked by what he indicates is a dichotomy.

Sorry with the delay getting back to this. I do indeed with the Help Manual being the WikiTree Bible (so to speak).

The problem is that the wording around the article on html and css has holes in it. Let's put it this way, if you see (or even hear) that something is not recommended then you generally assume that it is not advised that you do that thing due to an associated risk, but if you are prepared to handle the risk then fine. This concept is very familiar to me. Now, to say something is not allowed addresses something in a very different tone compared to saying that the particular action is not recommended.

This is the point I've mentioned and rementioned (multiple times now) is the differentation between the two phrases of not recommended and not allowed. You ask for me to cite examples, so over a 6 year span, you would honestly like a bullet point list of each G2G thread that has addressed or commented on the html topic?

Hi Richard,

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but these may help:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Style_FAQ (especially the question about things being "forbidden") and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Recommended_Tags

Based on the additional conversation herein, Chris has pointed out the relevant help pages that explain the stance on "not recommended".

For starters, G2G is a discussion forum and should not be taken as an addendum to Help Pages. The Help Pages are the official guidance on the subject. (period)

From Style FAQ:

First, you have to accept that someone else may change what you have done and you have no grounds to object. Any member can edit a profile so that it conforms to standard style.

Second, anything non-standard may not be supported in the future. If something is specifically recommended on a help or style page WikiTree will always try to support it in future changes and in whatever comes after WikiTree.

Sorry for the delay responding.

I get that. I've read the FAQs and the help page on everything html and css and reread it and then reread again once more and then 6 more times

I get that if something is not supported then it is not recommended. What I do not get is why I have received messages from people saying that it is not allowed.

The whole point of this (the initial post) is about the mixed message between "not recommended" and "not allowed" because the two do not mean the same thing

I don't understand what you mean. Are you talking about a Help page? a specific G2G post? Something else?

by Ros Haywood G2G Astronaut (2.0m points)
Both. The help page states one thing and yet, from everything in the G2G threads spanning from 2014 to now, the perception is vastly different. Hence the question of "not recommended" or "not allowed"?

Dear Richard,

It is necessary to translate WikiTree-cordial-speak to direct-speak.

On this page, for instance:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Recommended_Tags

"The following text modifiers are supported now and will be in the future:"

(Followed by the List as shown on the page.)

When not using cordial-speak, such as here:

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1064204/what-do-you-think-of-this-discussion-rules-proposal?show=1067853#c1067853

then the response is as shown.  This kind of response makes WikiTree cordial (warm and friendly, per dictionary) on all the 'help' pages.

A part of the WikiTree stated mission is to be "warm and friendly."  But, I find cordial-speak to be a wordy-foreign-language that taxes my patience in translating it.

Until you posted your question, I thought I was the only one who likes direct-speak.  So, thank you for adding your question to G2G.

Sincerely, B.

edit:  This was actually added after this Answer:  "I don't understand what you mean. Are you talking about a Help page? a specific G2G post? Something else?"
