Darryl, I cannot find any record of Mary Jane Wiggin marrying Abner Weeks, nor can I find any record of her being the mother of Charles Lincoln Weeks. Do you have any sources to back up this claim? The marriage record that you have on Mary's profile for 1854 is NOT Abner Weeks but for Charles Shaw. Please supply me with a source of some sort to verify these changes. Thank you in advance.

Hi Darryl,

I'm curious about you're reason for changing Samuel Buck's last name to Ames. It seems plausible, based on a few factors, but I was unable to spot any documented evidence in my admittedly quick review of the sources on the profile.

Is there a source that documents a name change?

I did not find an explanation for the name change. It appears that he chose to take his mother's maiden name (Eames). Perhaps he was estranged from his father.
posted by Darryl Rowles
Ok, it's possible. But, without documentation, is there something that makes you believe he changed his name?
posted by Geoff Buck
Either he changed his name or two people have been conflated. If you believe the later we/you can make a separate profile for Samuel Ames, disconnected from Jacob and Hannah Eames Buck.
posted by Darryl Rowles
I think the best course of action is to create a new profile for Samuel Ames, as you suggest, then add that as an unmerged match for Samuel Buck. Maybe add a note to each bio that these may be the same person.

Nice work on the "Maine in the Revolutionary War" page! I have done similar work for the Maryland Militia, State Troops, and Navy, so I can appreciate the amount of work that goes into developing such a page.

I have been doing research on privateering and have a few small comments on what you've written there:

- "Privateering Authorization": I think that it is needlessly perjorative to call them "legalized pirates". Privateering had been recognized as a legitimate form of warfare for centuries. Privateers operated under commissions from the Continental government, followed strict rules regarding humane treatment of persons, posted substantial bonds as guarantee that they would follow the rules, and answered to "Admiralty Courts" empowered to enforce those rules. Privateers operated in the same manner as would vessels in the Continental or state navies. It's more accurate to call them "privatized navy" rather than "legalized pirates."

- "Privateering Authorization": All of the letters of marque and reprisal came from the Continental government, and all patriot privateers followed the same regulations. Yes, the states administered the process, but all commissions were issued from the Continentals. Appeals from the state admiralty courts were handled by the Continental Congress itself until 1780 when the Congress formed a dedicated appeals court.

- "Targets and Prizes": The privateers were not entitled to sell the prizes themselves. That was done by the admiralty courts. The proceeds went to more parties than "owners, crews and investors"; the court also paid to parties who had prior liens on the vessel or its cargo. These court cases sometimes continued for years; the final one from the Revolution dragged on until 1787. Also, the state and/or Continental government imposed a hefty tax on the proceeds of sale.

I found the book "Rebels at Sea" by Eric Jay Dolin to be helpful. It's a popularization rather than an academic book, but I have found that its contents align well with the scholarly literature.

In any case, thanks for doing this! It's a great service to the WikiTree community.

Hi Darryl,

Some of the 1776 stickers you have included in biography updates are going to an error list. For example, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Littlefield-919 is missing the "American Revolution" component of the sticker. You can check the accuracy of the sticker by linking to the "Categories" button at top of a saved profile. If there's an error in the sticker, you will find the message "1776 Project Needs Sticker Category review."

Thank you for all the work you have done at 1776 Project, and we'll appreciate the extra effort to verify the 1776 stickers.

Best regards, Betty

Hi, Darryl, Seems we have a connection in the Calderwood family. Wiki says we are 9th cousins, but like all Vinalhaven descendants, we are probably related in many more ways. My Grandmother appears in more than one line and I suspect if I went a bit further in some of the "founding fathers" there would be more. My Grandmother was Christie (Calderwood) Whitney, the daughter of Frederick Hamlin Calderwood and Lucy Jane Mills. Frederick was the son of Willard who was the son of Jesse, who was the last of John and Eleanor's sons. Since so much of my background is from Vinalhaven and Rockport/Rockland area, I have amassed a large collection of material from there and the rest of "Old New England." Pleased to make your acquaintance, cousin! Sincerely, Marion Whitney Martin
Hey Darryl, Small world. I had a flash back to days gone by when your name came up in my daily browsing. (Think MMC Rad, married name Hersey). Seems we are 8th cousins once removed and share some 207 common ancestors. One of my Mayflower ancestors was Mary Chilton. Your records are pretty meticulous, I’m working on getting mine improved.

Thank you, "big time" for your touch-up of Mary Ann Zeigler Frain.

I hope it is ok. The project of the day was adding missing cemetery categories. Mary's profile was very nice to begin with. Many of the profiles for people buried there had nearly empty biographies.

thanks Darryll

Darryl,

My Sink ancestors are from Amoltern in SW Germany. Sink is a wonderfully uncommon surname. If you look at surname distributions in Germany, you will see very few. I have a LITTLE about Sinks in Amoltern. If you would like me to share anything, let me know.

I have some of the Rafanel/Rafnel family pieces of the puzzle. In fact, today is the anniversary of Augustus and Hannah's daughter, Sarah's wedding anniversary, 1841 07/04. She would die the following year after giving birth to a son. Both he and his father, Eleazer Moore, enlisted to fight in the CW in 1861. Neither survived, both died as POWs at different places. I found their records. To add to the tragedy of the little family, Eleazer died on the birthday of his departed wife Sarah. Then in 60's my guess is that it was a symbolic gesture....he probably walked across the 'dead line' and was shot dead. His son, is buried at Andersonville.

I'll email my extensive notes to anyone willing to post them for others.........George Hooper 111 [email address removed]
