Notes

Note NI64334 He converted to Mormonism and was baptized 7 April 1838 by Wilford Woodruff (ECH). In 1839 he moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. He was ordained 9 April 1840 by Wilford Woodruff in England and belonged to the 4th Quorum of Seventies (ECH). Neither he nor his wife Lydia appear on the 1840 census of either Maine or Illinois, although it is clear that he was an early settler there. Probably he came at the same time as his parents, about 1841. He does not appear on the 1842 tax list at Nauvoo.

When the Mormons evacuated Nauvoo in 1846 he followed Brigham Young across Iowa to Winter Quarters at Florence, Nebraska. His young son Thomas Benton Luce died at Winter Quarters. According to some records this son was born during the trek across Iowa, and according to others he was quite a bit older, having been born in Maine. Ephraim's wife and children went across the plains to Salt Lake, probably in 1849 (Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel database). Ephraim himself came to Utah in 1851, traveling in James W. Cummings' Company. He was recorded as "Ephraim Luce, 1 Soul, 1 Waggon, 2 Horses" (Alfred Cordon Emigrating Company, «i»Journal«i», 1851 June-Sept.; McAllister, John Daniel Thompson, «i»Journals«i», 1851-1906, reel 1, box 1, fd. 1, 6-7).

He appears on the 1851 census in Salt Lake City. In 1852 he was living in Salt Lake's 6th Ward (Registry). He was defendant in a replevin case filed 3 May 1856, Margaret Kaighin v. Ephraim Luce, Salt Lake County. He was endowed 24 September 1859 at Salt Lake (ECH).

He died 2 March 1880 in either Salt Lake City or Spanish Fork.
