James Grant was born Aug. 18,1816 and christened Aug. 25, 1816 in Duffus, Morayshire , Scotland to parents John Grant and Kat. Ross.

James Grant marries Elspet Ogilvie (born New Spynie 1827 according to the 1871 census) on Feb. 2, 1849 in Elgin and in 1851 they are living at 92 High Street, Elgin and he is listed as a butcher. He and his wife have a son Andrew born in 1849 and James who was just 1 month old when the census was taken.

James is a farmer of 25 acres living at Crookes in the 1861 census. They have children all born in Duffus: Andrew born 1849, James 1851, Elspet 1854 and John 1858.

In 1871 James and Elspet are in East Crookes (Crookies) farming 24 acres and their children Elspet 1855, John 1860, Agnes 1862, William 1866 and Jessie 1870 are living with them. As well they have their grand daughter Jane Ann Grant just 3 months old----

In 1881 James and Elspet are still in Crookes with their children William and Jessie. The same grand daughter Jane born 1871 is with them as well as a grandson James More born 1873.

According to Scotlands People a James Grant died in 1889 in Elgin at the age of 74. This tallies with his birth year.

It is their daughter Elspet that lives with her grandparents John Grant and Katherine Ross.
