Alexander was baptised in Sept. 1823 in Duffus, Elgin.

In 1841 he is 16 and living with his parents at Woodside, Duffus, Moray.

The 1851 Scotland census lists Alexander Grant as a farm laborer for John MacKid, his wife and young daughter Ann in Urquhart, Moray. The MacKids only own 8 acres.

On Nov. 23, 1859 , at the rather old age of 36, he married Margaret Denoon in Elgin, Morayshire.

In the 1861 census he is an innkeeper at 5 South St., Elgin, Moray with Ann MacKid born in Urquhart, Moray as a servant. The building is still in use.

Their daughter Ann is born in Aug. 1861, Catherine in June 1863, Margaret in Aug. 1866 (she dies in Oct. 1866 from an inflammation of the glands in her neck at 106 High St.), John in 1867, Elizabeth Jean in June 1868 (she dies in March 1872 after suffering from diphtheria for 4 days at 106 High St.).

In 1871 the family is living at 106 High Street, Elgin and John is still an innkeeper. This bigger building is almost behind the one on South St. but faces onto High St. They have been there since at least 1866.

The family sets sail from Glasgow for Canada (Quebec City) in 1872 on the Corinthian. Listed on the manifest with Alexander age 45, his wife Margaret age 37, daughters Ann age 10 and Cate age 8 and son John age 7. They arrive in Quebec City June 11, 1872.

They take up farming on Conc. 7, Lot 16, Aaron Twp., Bruce Co. on Feb. 1, 1873. It took them about 6 months to make the trip from Quebec City to the farmstead. According to the records at the Walkerton Land Registry Office Sam., Wm., and Jas. Hewetson owned the 100 acres from a patent given in June 1860 and they in turn sold the land to Alex Grant and held the $900 mortgage.

In April 1876 Alex buys Conc. 7, Lot 22 from James Hewetson. In 1879 he gave some of the land for the town of Arkwright. In 1891 Alex Grant freeholds Conc 7, Lot 16 and has 97 acres of land of which 90 acres are cleared. He is also a tenant on Conc. 6, Lot 14 with 50 acres cleared. In 1897 Alex and his son William own the land and it has a value of $3200. The land is owned by Catherine Graham and Wm. Grant in Aug. 1912 after the death of their father Alex. Then in 1946 it was owned by Wm. and Sarah Grant and by June 12 1997 it was sold out of the family to Harvey Richards.

In Canada, Alexander and Margaret had twins Alexander and William born in Sept. 1873 and another son Gordon born in 1876.

Margaret dies in 1881 from cancer of the liver when the boys were still very young. Ann and Catherine raised them.

Alexander doesn't marry again and dies on May 2, 1912 at the age of 85 from heart failure/old age. He was living at lot 10, con. 6 (his son William's home) Aaron Twp. when he dies.

He is buried in the Henderson Cemetery . Their grandson Roderick Grant is also buried in the Henderson Cemetery. The Henderson Cemetery was known as the Methodist New Connexion Burying Ground and is located at Conc. 7, Lot 21.
