Biography

Birth and Parents

Ephraim Adams Sr was born in Massachusetts.

Ephraim, the fourth of five children of John Adams and Esther Perham was born on 13 January 1750/1 at Chelmsford, Massachusetts.[1]

During adulthood, Ephraim came to Stoddard, New Hampshire say 1772 and said to have lived on Lot 13, Range 12. Stories say he had come even earlier as a young man, and had helped lay out the town into lots.

Ephraim, served at the rank of Private in a Civil Service capacity (Selectman and Teamster) during the American Revolutionary War at New Hampshire.

He served as a Selectman in 1775 at Stoddard with Col. Enoch Hale's Regiment and in 20 December 1783 engaged in Military Service at the rank of Private at Stoddard, New Hampshire.[2]

Marriages and Children

Ephraim was a Deacon in the Congregational Church. He married twice. Ephraim married 1) Betsy Pierce (1751-1804), the daughter of Stephen and Betsey "Betty" (Bowers) Pierce on 6 March 1777 at Chelmsford, Massachusetts. They had nine children born at Stoddard:

Betsey (Pierce) Adams died on 11 October 1804 at Stoddard. She is buried in Dow Hill Cemetery.

Ephraim married 2) Anna Adams (1754-1844) on 26 December 1805 at Stoddard, New Hampshire. There were no children from this union. She is buried in Dow Hill Cemetery.

"Ephraim was not only a good husbandman [farmer], he was prominent in town affairs and held town and school offices, and was chosen to arbitrate many disputes, as he not only had good judgment, he had a strong sense of justice. He was one of the ten men and women who met to organize the Orthodox Congregational Church in Stoddard and was the first Deacon, an office he held for life.[16]

Death and Burial

Pvt. and Deac. Ephraim Adams, widower, died on 28 April 1823 in his 72nd year at Stoddard.[17]He is buried in Dow Hill Cemetery at Stoddard, Cheshire, New Hampshire.[18]
