Biography

John Abell was a Maryland colonist.

Name

Given Name: John
Surname: Abell[1][2][3]

Birth

Date: 1679
Place: St. Mary's Co., MD[4][5][6][7]

Notes on Marriages

John Abell's first wife was ____Fisher, daughter of Edward Fisher. She wasn't Mary Usher.
5/13/1714: Admin. accts. of Edward Fisher, SMC. Payments to: John Abell for his wife (unnamed, a child's part); Thomas Batson for his wife (unnamed, a child's part), Adm., Wm. Thompson (Skinner). The estate was paid by John Taylor. The estate made payments to (in addition to the children): David Watson, Mr. Henry Lowe, and Thomas Price.
His second wife was Frances Wilkinson, daughter of William Wilkinson and his wife, Catherine. There is no proof that I've found that Catherine's surname was Stone.
Mary Usher:
There are those who claim that Mary Usher, daughter of Thomas Usher, was the wife of John Abell based on a land record which named Mary, wife of John Abell, in 1715. This won't work as Mary was named as a minor in her father's will in 1714. She was not old enough to have married John Abell and have had 3 children by 1715. The wife of John Abell of SMC was ____ FISHER, daughter of Edward Fisher.
Others cite this record below:
PATENTS E.I.#1 f363-365 1734 Kent Co., Md. Land in Kent Co. which Thomas Usher left to his son, George & his dau. MARY, WIFE OF JOHN ABELL who sold her 55 acres to Thomas Morsoll. (Note to me from Tom Jennings, 1/17/2004).
The exact date of this patent isn't given and I know that Robert Hutchins (former husband of Frances) had died before May 20, 1734 (the probate date of his will).
Admin. accts. of Robert Hutchins 7/2/1734 and 9/16/1734; appraisers were Charles King and Jonathan Abell; next of kin was Aquilla Hutchins and James Wilkinson; Exec., Frances Hutchins (Skinner).
12/16/1735: Admin. accts. of Robert Hutchins, SMC. Sureties: Philip Clarke, Samuel Abell. Payments to (among others): Edward Goldsberry, legacy from his grandfather and in hands of the deceased. Exec: Frances Abell, wife of John Abell.
Linda Reno

Death

Date: before 8 NOV 1746 (date will proved)
Place: St. Mary's Co., MD[8][9][10][11]

  12. Transcribed by Judith A. Burger March 8, 2001 from a photocopy of the original court record, TA 1, 203-204, obtained from Norma I. Dawson, Register of Wills, Saint Mary's County Maryland. The photocopy was good, but the writing distorted and illegible in part. The name of the land bequeathed to Enoch Abell was illegible to me. I made no corrections of any kind.

update: PPP removed (no pending merges; removal requested by a member of the US Southern Colonies project)

I reviewed the MatchBot-proposed merge for Abell-389 and Abel-1192 & it appears the profiles are intended to represent the same person, although one has Abel and one Abell. Based on information in attached profiles, I protected Abell-389 on behalf of the Proprietary Maryland project (transcript of father Samuel's will has Abell).
