He married his first wife, Sarah Reynolds (then age 17) in 1840. Together, they had 13 children between 1842 and 1866. Sarah died in 1886 and in the next year Ralph married another Sarah, Sarah Cross (then age 36).
Sarah died in 1898 and Ralph also passed in 1901. His obituary records that:
Another Hawkesbury identity has passed away, in the person of Mr Ralph Turnbull, senr, of Wilberforce. The deceased had attained the age of 86 years and 8 months, and was a native of the district. He had been engaged all his life in agricultural pursuits, and was able to do a hard day's work up to within a day or two of his demise. He died on the 14th inst, and was buried at the Church of England Cemetery, Wilberforce, on the 15th, the funeral service being conducted by the Rev W. S. Newton, M.A. The pall bearers were Messrs Joseph Brown Palmer Bushell, E Beecroft, and David Bushell. Prior to his death, the deceased expressed the wish that a very old friend of his, Mr Penton, from Colo, should walk before the hearse, and this wish was respected. The late Mr Turnbull leaves a very large number of descendants, most of whom are settled in this district. The Turnbull family is a highly respected one, and wherever you go you hear it spoken of in terms of praise. The name has been interwoven with the district since the earliest days of settlement, and there are many relatives of the deceased still living here. The family of the deceased were Messrs William (Freeman's Reach), Ralph and John (Wilberforce), Ernest Turnbull (Newcastle), Mrs P. Daley, Mrs Lockhart, and Mrs T. Salter (Wilberforce), and Mrs J. Salter (Tamworth).[1]
Ralph is buried in St. John's Cemetery, Wilberforce.[2]
