Birth
Edwin was born in 1867 in Hanborough, Oxfordshire.[1] He was the son of Thomas Turfrey and Eliza Berry. His baptism took place at St Peter and St Paul, Hanborough on 21st April 1867.[2] His father stated on the register that he was a labourer.

Thomas, wife Eliza and children Sarah, William, George, Edwin, Lizzie, Jane and Kate emigrated on the "Winchester" which left the UK on 2nd May 1874. and arrived in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand on 27th July 1874.[4] The records show they came from Oxfordshire and that Thomas was a railway labourer.
