Biography

Birth

This profile is part of the Hanborough, Oxfordshire One Place Study.

Eliza was born in 1840 in Hanborough.[1] She was the daughter of Edward Berry and Caroline Slatter. Her baptism took place at St Peter and St Paul, Hanborough on 6th September 1840 and her father gave his occupation on the baptism register as labourer.[2]

Marriage

Thomas Turfrey and Eliza Berry were married after banns at St Peter and St Paul, Hanborough on 8th April 1860.[3] They were bachelor and spinster and both living in Hanborough at the time. Thomas was of full age, working as a labourer and the son of George Turfrey who was also a labourer. Eliza was 19, working as a gloveress and the daughter of Edward Berry who was a labourer. Eliza signed her own name on the register whilst Thomas could only make his mark with a cross. The witnesses to the marriage were George Turfrey and Emma Wiggins.[4]

Thomas, along with his wife Eliza and children Sarah, William, George, Edwin, Lizzie, Jane and Kate emigrated on the "Winchester" which left the UK on 2nd May 1874. and arrived in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand on 27th July 1874.[9] The records show they came from Oxfordshire and that Thomas was a railway labourer.

Death

Eliza died in 1920 in Waipawa, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.[10] She was buried at Petits Valley, OngaOnga on 24th August 1920.[11]
