Biography

James was born in Ancrum 1806 to William Sinton (1778-1841) and Isabella (Scott) Sinton (1778-1849).

He married Margaret Hogg on 4 Dec 1836 at Jedburgh. [1]

Children: James (1836), William (1837), Walter H. (1841-60), John (1845) and George (1847).

In 1841 the family are at Castlegate, Jedburgh: James, 35 , labourer; Margaret, 32; James, 5yrs; William, 3yrs; Walter, 1 month. [2]

In the 1851 census the family are at Greenriver Garden, Hobkirk, Roxburghshire.

SINTON: James, head, mar, 45, road lab, b Ancrum; wife Margaret, 44, b Wilton; Children (all b Jedburgh): James, 15, road lab; William, 13, road lab; Walter H, 9, scholar; John, 5, scholar; George, 3.

In the (April) 1861 census the family are at Fulton, Bedrule, Roxburghshire. James Sinton, head, 55, labourer, born Ancrum; Margaret, 53, labourer's wife, born Wilton; John, 15, labourer, born Jedburgh; George, 13, scholar, born Jedburgh. [4]

Within a few months of the census he passed away (between 7 July and 9 Nov) at Fulton, Bedrule.

Son Walter also having passed away in 1860, and son William having emigrated that year to New Zealand, James' widow Margaret immediately decided to emigrate to New Zealand, leaving London on 9 Nov 1861.


Research Notes

1/ After James' death in 1861 his widow Margaret emigrated to NZ . She passed away on 26 Jan 1879 in Auckland, NZ.[5] Born 19 Feb 1807.[6]

Photograph of gravestone and marble replica of the same inscription, in Hobsonville Cemetery. It reads: "In memory of Margaret Hogg wife of the late James Sinton of Jedburgh, Scotland, died Jan. 26th 1879, aged 72 years; also her son William died July 16th 1889, aged 42 years; also Janet beloved wife of William Sinton died June 25th 1927, aged 88 years.

2/ Meryl Morris is a descendant of Margaret Hogg and James Sinton.
