Family history from his nephew Richard Savage (deceased) suggests Maurice emigrated from Ireland with his brother Patrick. Both brothers got married in Tenterfield NSW around the same time.

Baptism of a Maurice Savage of Tralee on 28 August 1853 (however this doesn’t fit his death date in 1939 aged 82 which calculates a birth year about 4 years later in 1857) shows Father Maurice Savage & Mother Margaret Hanafin, Sponsors Denis Hanafin & Mary Murphy Priest Rev. T Cavanagh. Maurice & Margaret (nee Hanafin) also show baptisms for Elizabeth 4 November 1850; & Margaret born 12 December 1860, baptised 2 days later on 14 Dec. 1860. irishgenealogy.ie KY-RC-BA475999.

I can't find any other records for Maurice Savage born to the same mother as my Great Grandfather, if anything this Maurice could be a cousin, however he is born within a year of Patrick so could be the brother as our family believes with a mis-recorded Mothers name, so confusing!

Queensland Police Gazette 1891-1909 entry; Constable Maurice Savage to be inspector of slaughter houses along with an acting Sargeant Lawrence Phelan Entry 251 in 1902 page 94 of 228. Coincidence is the name Phelan which could be a relation of Annie (lots of confusion with her maiden name but Phelan seems a likely one. However I have reservations about this Gazette entry as this could be a different Maurice Savage to ours that was married in the border town of Tenterfield NSW

Maurice Savage born about 1866 making him 18 at time of immigration (could be transcription error for birth year as we believe Maurice was born in 1853) departed London England & arrived Brisbane 22/08/1884 ; Queensland, Australia, Passenger Lists, 1848-1912. This could be our Maurice as his arrival is 1 year before his marriage to Anne in Tenterfield, NSW, Australia. A younger Maurice also arrived in Brisbane on board ship Dacca from London England on 12/11/1888 which is several years after our Maurice was married, so unlikely. Another Maurice Savage was recorded as born in Tralee on Ireland Civil register DOB 24 July 1867 which is out by 14 years & additionally a different Mothers name!

There is a M Savage engaged in London on a ship "Wonga Fell" 19/12/1905 recorded in NSW. Also record "Gowarburn" bound for Manilla 5/12/1910. If this was Maurice he would have been 52 & 57 years of age. I have little family knowledge of Maurice & no knowledge of him being a seaman so this entry may not be relevant particularly as it shows his birthplace as London rather than Ireland. Tenterfield NSW; "the population exploded in the 1880's after the discovery of gold at Morgans Gully and ropers Gully just north of the town www.northernstar.com.au/news/gold-fever-strikes-region-mine-drake-casino/697582/" Could this be the drawcard for brothers Maurice & Patrick to arrive in Tenterfield
