Research Notes

Mark Quealy's family records show Patrick’s mother was Mary Carmody not Mary Corcoran (coincidentally his marriage celebrant was Father Pierce Corcoran). No explanation why this conflicting information exists at this stage. St Mary's Tenterfield Parish marriage record records his fathers name only as Maurice Savage, His brother Maurice's (Savage-6279) marriage record confirms parents names as Maurice & Mary Savage with no clue as to Mary's maiden name.
Address for Patrick is shown as Curraheen, Tralee, Kerry which appears to be a little peninsula near Derrymore on googlemaps. No civil birth record prior to 1864. Still needs further research to confirm Patrick's mother was Carmody not Corcoran. Mark Quealy Mary Baaner (his late granddaughter) had no clarity on the Corcoran vs Carmody parentage.
No details are known of his travel from Ireland to Australia. If we can assume he was at least 18, then it would have been between 1870 and his marriage in 1889. Most available manifests are either pre-date his birth or post date his marriage in Australia. There is one record, however, that is possibly for Patrick although it shows him working as part of the crew.[8] Anderson-23510 17:48, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

Patrick died 10 December 1934 & buried Macquarie Park Cemetery North Ryde NSW Australia after a requiem Mass on Tuesday 11th, Our Lady of Dolours, Ardern St, Chatswood, NSW Australia

Mary Gallaghers written record of family history starts with her great Grandfather Maurice Savage marrying Mary Carmody in 1834 & had son Patrick baptised 8 Sept 1852 & possibly had a son Maurice born 1878 & died 7 January 1972 in Curraheen, who in turn had a son James in Curraheen in 1901. Whilst it is an account without evidence she is adamant that her Great Grandmother is Mary Carmody. Could there have been 2 Mary Carmody's married to a second Maurice Savage around the same time in Curraheen? Mary visited the family farm in Curraheen some years ago. She firmly believes this was where her Grandfather Patrick grew up. The visit was with her late husband Jim who was a thorough researcher.

Another Marriage Certificate NSW BDM 7083 (different number) / 1889 Copy issued 11/10 1988 shows Patrick married Mary A Hawkins

Parish letter issued 18/10/1993 details priest officiating at wedding was Father Pierce Corcoran (Mary Corcoran appears in some documents as Patrick’s mother’s maiden name whilst others show her as Mary Carmody!). Witness Patrick & Maggie Hawkins of Tenterfield. Marriage date 9 January 1889.

Mary Gallagher has a 2003 letter from County Kerry County Archivist, Michael Lynch that shows a Daniel was baptised on 17/3/1855 son of Maurice Savage & Mary Savage (nee Corcoran) from Curraheen. This baptism is 3 years after Patrick & 2 years after Maurice were baptised. Michael suggests that Corcoran is a possible error in transcription. Wiki tree Savage-5441shows Daniel born to a different Mother Mary Savage (nee Carmody) with the same date of birth as this one.

Baptism of Mary Corcoran shows birth date 17 March (St Patricks Day) 1812, Father, Thomas Corcoran; Mother, Ellen Stack, (irishgenealogy.com.ie) if this was found to be Patricks correct Mother she would have been 40 when she gave birth to Patrick, however the family believe Patricks Mother was Mary Carmody (no supporting evidence yet).

Patrick Savage birth church records (irish genealogy.com.ie) show sponsor is Thomas Savage. A Thomas Savage of Killury (26 kilometres from Curraheen) married Margaret Carmody on 18 December 1819. A long bow to draw but he could fit the time line as the sponsor at Patricks baptism 23 years later.

Visited Parish Priest, Father Barry Leech, 73 Miles St Tenterfield on 12 July 2022. Church Marriage Register held @ St Mary’s Presbytery: Savage Patrick Married Hawkins Mary Ann, both residents in Tenterfield, married 9 January 1889, no dispensation required, Celebrant Fr. Pierce Corcoran [see Wikitree Corcoran-2198], parents Maurice Savage (County Kerry) & Patrick Hawkins (Tenterfield) Witness: Patrick Hawkins & Maggie Hawkins both of Tenterfield. Original stone chapel (now known as St Mary's Hall & constructed 1867 by McGauran Brothers with stone from Stoney Creek) that Patrick & Anne were wed in is still in remarkable condition next to the newer church which was built in 1940 to accomodate a surge in parishioners

Many splendid buildings exist in Tenterfield that were built in 1880’s suggesting a boom at the time. The year Patrick & Mary Ann married was the same year that Henry Parkes made his famous speech as a member for Tenterfield in which he proposed a uniting of the states to form a Nation, this vision was enacted 12 years later in 1901 to form Australia as a nation. Historic Stannum House built in 1888 by wealthy tin miner John Holmes Reid was built with the idea that it would be a premier contender for being the home of a proposed leader of the much talked about Federal Capital of Australia. It is now a magnificent guest-house & restaurant

NSW ELECTORAL ROLLS 1911 Gordon - Chatswood residents of Davis Street (Possibly Davies Street which is adjoined by Wood Street); Mary Ann Savage (domestic duties), Catherine Savage (domestic duties), & Patrick Savage (wheelwright), ALSO resident of Wood St was Maurice Joseph Savage (clerk)

Not far from the Savage household on Great Western Highway, St Marys (around 1891 to 1895) was a cart work manufacturer & Volunteer Hotel (established 1859 by James Patrick Bennett). The hotel was subsequently named Park View Hotel after WW1 & is now known as Wagon Wheel Hotel timegents.com

Patrick was born 8 February 1852 in Curraheen, Tralee, County Kerry. He migrated to Australia before 1889 and worked all his life as a wheelwright. I imagine he did his apprenticeship in Ireland as he had 3 chisels that he used for his trade that are believed to originate from about 1700AD. It would be great to find some evidence of his apprenticeship as information about his Irish history is scarce.

During the 1890 Depression countless deaths were attributed to malnutrition as rescue packages such as the dole were regarded as fostering laziness & morally wrong (pg.214 “1932” by Gerald Stone). Patrick also experienced a second Depression in1920/30’s

Patrick’s granddaughter my Auntie Mary Baaner nee Quealy was unable to remember any relevant details about her grandfather. Sadly she has now passed away. I have seen another of Patrick’s granddaughters. Her name is Mary Gallagher nee Savage daughter of Richard V Savage. Mary has a strong belief that her great grandmother was Mary Carmody. Mary Gallagher has visited Curraheen and remains in regular contact with the family she believes she is related to in Curraheen.

Lived in a house on Great Western Highway, St Marys, on hill leading away from Penrith but before Queen St intersection, near Church of England possibly, according to my fathers memory (as relayed from my Mum today 25/8/2018)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Patrick by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Patrick:

Patrick Savage appears to have worked on a ship named "ANN" (no further details of engagement or whether this was his entry to Australia as an immigrant) followed by work as an Able Seaman on a ship "Nonpariel" from Adelaide S.A. on 20/3/1882 to NSW. He also worked on ship "Viscount Macduff" 17/5/1882 NSW Registers of Seaman 1859-1936 as per Ancestry.com.au

Patrick Savage (Seaman) discharged NSW from the 3 masted Schooner Viscount Macduff on 17/5/1882, (this ship which was launched 30/7/1874 sailed to Sydney disappeared off Newcastle NSW coast soon after & listed as disposed on 2/8/1882). This seaman is likely to be my great grandfather as this would have aged him about 30. 7 years after this discharge he married Mary Ann Hawkins in Tenterfield NSW. Patrick travelled to Australia with his brother Maurice. 2 siblings Richard Savage (married Mary S.. in 1892) & Julia (married Thomas Fitzgerald on 5/8/1890) were believed to be the only siblings who migrated to U.S.A. Patricks accompanying brother Maurice also married in Tenterfield NSW according to Mary Gallagher nee Savage (Patricks grandaughter). I spoke to Mary last month.

seems to be numerous Maurice Savage records. As Patrick & his brother Maurice (as profiled by me) are 33 years apart I'm wondering if I have made a mistake. Certainly needs a lot more research

No record on ‘claim a convict’. However, Trove lists a court case for a Patrick Savage (father of Thomas) accused of murdering his brother William on 28/6/1871 at Field of Mars, NSW. Our Patrick would have been 19 at the time so too young to father Thomas. This Patrick was later acquitted. This was probably another Patrick as no evidence that my G.G had a brother William or son Thomas. My G.G Patrick was married in 1889 to Mary Ann

Unable to find migration record, though Ship Nabob brought immigrant Patrick Savage of Isle of Mann, aged 18 (Miner) from Liverpool England on 1/9/1856 arriving Port Adelaide on 23/12/1856, B/Index 1431/1. UNLIKELY to be him, our Patrick was only 4, wrong occupation, not aware of connection to Australia, my dad is sure Patrick was born in Ireland (not Isle of Mann).

findagrave.com shows 2 Patrick Savages buried @ Rookwood Cemetery, NSW on 4/7/1870 & 21/2/1893. As his daughter Ann was born in 1893 it is probably neither of these 2. Also another Patrick Savage was born 1798 & died 14/10/1849 Windsor aged 51 at death (again no obvious link). Since found out correct burial & death details from his Grandaughter Mary Gallagher
