John was born in the village of Banton in Stirlingshire, Scotland in 1880. He was the son of Thomas Miller and Margaret Sneddon.
At the time of the 1901 Census John, his parents and 10 siblings are living in Banton.[1]

Jock emigrated to New Zealand prior to 1911. He settled on the West Coast of the South Island where he worked as a miner. He went back to Scotland to serve with the Gordon Highlanders during WWI. He returned to New Zealand after the war. Younger brothers Archie and Andy followed him a few years later.
After retiring he lived with brother Archie and sister-in-law Mary in Hokitika. He passed away in 1959, aged 79 years, [2] and is buried in Hokitika Cemetery. [3]
