John McEwan was born about 1850 in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland. He was the son of William McEwan and Margaret Marshall.

In the 1851 census John, age 7 Mo, was the son of William Mcewan at 6th House, Crieff, Perthshire.^[1]

In the 1861 census John, age 10, scholar, was the grandson of Ann M'ewan at 3 Saunder's St, Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Midlothian.^[2]
