William McEwan was born about 1847 in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland. He was the son of William McEwan and Margaret Marshall.

In the 1851 census Wm, age 4, was the son of William Mcewan at 6th House, Crieff, Perthshire.^[1]

In the 1861 census William, age 14, message boy, was the son of William Mcewan at 43 India Place, Edinburgh St Stephen, Midlothian.^[2]

In the 1871 census William, age 24, mason, was the grandson of Ann Mcewan at 8 Mackenzie Proc, Edinburgh St Stephens, Midlothian.^[3]
