Helen McEwan was born about 1849 in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of William McEwan and Margaret Marshall.

In the 1851 census Helen, age 2, was the daughter of William Mcewan at 6th House, Crieff, Perthshire.^[1]

In the 1861 census Helen, age 12, scholar, was the daughter of William Mcewan at 43 India Place, Edinburgh St Stephen, Midlothian.^[2]
