Biography
John was born to Donald McAdie and Jessie Murray [1] around 1821 as the 1871 census notes that John was 50 years old at the time and was born in Watten, Caithness.[2]
John married Jane Swanson in Jane's place of birth Olrig, Caithness on November 22, 1844[3]
John and Jane had two children Donald and John in Olrig and then a further five children in Halkirk, Caithness[4]
John became a widower in 1878 when Jane died of acute tuberculosis.
The 1891 census lists John as a 68 year old widower and a mason living with his 26 year old shoemaker son Alexander and his 28 year old son George, a labourer.[5]
The 1901 census lists John as a former mason of 82 years old and blind [6]however a year later at his death, he is recorded as being 77.
John's death was witnessed by his daughter-in-law Christina McAdie.[7] His death record lists his father as Donald McAdie and his mother as Jessie Murray. The cause of death was listed as debility and age.
