Biography

Michael was born in 1857.

In 1861 he was 3 living with his parents John Munson, 29 and Margaret Munson, 30. Their children were Laurence Munson, 6; Michael Munson, 3 and Margaret Munson, 1. Janet Bain, 64 and Elisabeth Malcolmson, 23 lived with them^[1].

In 1871 Michael was 13, living with his parents John Manson, 39, a Fisherman and Margaret Manson, 40. Their children were Laurence Manson, 16; Michel Manson, 13; Margaret Manson, 11; Barbara Manson, 8; Robena Manson, 5 and John Manson, 2^[2].

Michael married Jane Renwick on 6 Aug 1878^[3].

In 1881 Michael was 24, a Store Clerk, married to Jane, living in Nanoose Bay, Vancouver Island with their daughters Margaret Manson, 1 and Robina Jane Manson, 3 months^[4].

In 1891 Michael was 34 living in Nanaimo City, BC with Jane Manson, 29 and their daughter Maggie Manson, 8. Ellen Britts, 29 a general servant lived with them. Michael owned a steamship and hunted seals^[5].

In 1901 Michael was 43, living in Union Bay, near Courtenay BC with his spouse Jane Manson, 38. Their children were Margaret Manson, 18; Ethel and Robina Manson, 9; Hazel Manson, 4; Wilfred Manson, 6 and Flossie and Florence Manson, 1. He was an owner or keeper of a wharf^[6].

In 1921 Michael was 64, farming in Whaletown, Hernando Island with Jane, 58. His brother in law Frances Alexander Campbell, 22 and his wife Constance Gwendoline Campbell, 19 were living with them^[7].

Mike was a merchant and store owner. He would later become a justice of the peace and a Conservative MLA in the BC Legislature, representing Comox from 1909 to 1916 and Mackenzie from 1924 until his death in 1932. The community of Mansons Landing on Cortes Island was named after him and several of the family's descendants still live on the island^[8].

He died on 11 July 1932 in Bella Coola, age 75^[9]. He was buried in the Nanaimo Municipal Cemetery. His children were Robina Steel Freeman; Ethel Bain Hurren; Florence Jessie McKay; Jane Minerva Hazel Rutherford; Barbara Ethel Manson; John William Manson; Margaret Manson; Martha Grace Manson; Robina Jane Manson and Constance Gwendoline Campbell.
