Michael Manson (April 29, 1857 – July 11, 1932) was a Scottish-born farmer and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Comox from 1909 to 1916 and Mackenzie from 1924 to 1933 in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as a Conservative. He was born in Pickigarth, Shetland Islands on April 29, 1857, the son of John Manson and Margaret Bain. He came to British Columbia in 1874. In 1879, Manson married Jane Renwick. He was a director of the Call Creek Oyster Company. Manson also served as a justice of the peace.[2] From 1887 to 1895, he operated a trading post on Cortes Island with his brother John. He was defeated when he ran for reelection to the assembly in 1916.[4] Manson died in Bella Coola on July 11, 1932, at the age of 75. Michael was born on 13 May 1894 on Cortez Island, BC, the son of Michael Manson, Merchant, and Jane Renwick[3].
In 1901 Wilfred was 6, living in Union Bay, near Courtenay on Vancouver Island with his parents Michael, 43 and Jane, 38. Their children were Margaret Manson, 18; Ethel Manson, and Robina Manson, 9; Hazel Manson, 4; Wilfred Manson, 6; Flossie Manson, 1 and Florence Manson, 1[4].
Michael joined the Cavalry, Canadian Expeditionary Force on 8 April 1915 in Victoria, BC. His occupation was Customs Clerk. He had served for 2 years in the Corps of Guides. He was 5' 8.5", grey eyes, brown hair. His NoK was his father Michael, living at 1210 Dominion Bldg, Vancouver. His Regimental number was 49453[5][6]. He arrived in England on 4 June 1915 aboard the Southampton and was shipped to France on the 19th. On 21 June 1916 he was posted to Dieppe. On 18 March he was field promoted to Corporal. He was a Corporal in the Canadian Forestry Companies as of 6 April 1917 when he was diagnosed with measles. He rejoined on 44 April 1917, and was later posted to the RAF on 8 Feb 1918, Service Number 123870[7]. On 10 Sept 1917 he was an aerial gunner. On 19 Feb 1918 he was discharged in England, a Corporal second class in the First Forestry Co having served in Rouen and other locations in France for over 2 years[8]. he was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal[9].
Janet Niven married Michael Wilfred Manson, on 10 Jun 1920 in Vancouver[10].
In 1921 Michael and Jean Anne were farming on Hernando Island, in the northern Gulf Islands, BC[11]. They had two children, Dorothy and Wilfred James.
He died on 26 July 1970 of myocardial infarction, arteriosclerosis in North Vancouver, age 76. He had Polycythemia vera for 10 years previous.[12].
