Biography

William Maness Sr is a member of Clan Gunn.
U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Maness Sr was a North Carolina colonist.
This profile is part of the Maness Name Study.

Possible son of John Maness (abt.1655-aft.1728) and Polly (Garner) Maness (1670-1730).

There is evidence that sons of this William were born in Virginia in the mid 1700s, so many of the connections to North Carolina prior to 1750 are questionable.

This profile birthdate shows he was born in Scotland but Biography states a much earlier date in North Carolina.
I think the bio is referencing that John Maness his father was born in 1655. To my knowledge there has never been any verification that William Maness was born in North Carolina. The John Maness listed as his father is indeed thought to have been born in Scotland, but again, no corroborating sources. If you look under the Research Notes heading above, there are two Wikitree Research spaces that are being worked through for this family. That said, however, I agree that this profile should be modified to be clearer about birthdates/places, etc.

Thanks for the revision in bio. I had moved the Space Pages, which had been above Biography, into Research Notes, as well as the other 'listings' with dates, which had been in Sources, so they are more visible as 'work in progress'. Both Rootsweb links in the profile no longer work.
Maness-372 and Maness-89 appear to represent the same person because: Maness-89 death date seems to agree with the probate court records listed as sources. Both profiles have same wife and child.

Maness-319 and Maness-89 appear to represent the same person because: birth and death years match, both have same wife...
