Biography

Birth & Baptism

William Dey Garden was born on 7 Feb 1874 in Mortlach, Banffshire, Scotland. He is the son of Peter Garden and Jessie Forsyth. His baptism took place on 15 Feb 1874 in Dufftown, Banffshire. His sponsors are listed as Geo. Garden Jr. and Helen Stuart.[1]

Occupation & Military Service

For a period of 5 years prior to joining the army William was employed as an apprentice tailor, working for his father Peter Garden. He then served in the Royal Engineers Corps as a Sapper from September 1892 to September 1904. He joined in London, England at 18 years and 4 months old. His service number was 27018. He completed two campaigns in South Africa. Once from Oct 1899 - Sept 1902 and again from Mar 1903 - Sept 1904.[2]

Marriage & Children

William married Catharina Magdalena de Waal on 29 May 1914 in Wolmaransstad, Transvaal, South Africa. He was a bachelor living in Johannesburg at the time of the marriage.[3]

In December 1923 the family lived at 114 Sixth Avenue, Bezuidenhout Valley, Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa. His wife Catharina passed away at their home on 10 December 1923. She was 36 years old at the time of her death.[4]

Physical Description & Other Information

William followed the Roman Catholic faith. He was described as having blue eyes, fair skin and fair hair. He stood at 5 feet 4 inches tall.[2] In 1923 William was employed as a Telephone Faultman.[4]

  • In William's marriage & military service record's his birth place is listed as Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland. However in prior census records his birthplace is listed as Mortlach, Banffshire, Scotland.
  • In his marriage record his age is listed as 38-years-old, which indicates a birth year of 1876. This conflicts with his baptism records which indicate his birth year as 1874.
