Occupation & Military Service
For a period of 5 years prior to joining the army William was employed as an apprentice tailor, working for his father Peter Garden. He then served in the Royal Engineers Corps as a Sapper from September 1892 to September 1904. He joined in London, England at 18 years and 4 months old. His service number was 27018. He completed two campaigns in South Africa. Once from Oct 1899 - Sept 1902 and again from Mar 1903 - Sept 1904.[2]
Marriage & Children
William married Catharina Magdalena de Waal on 29 May 1914 in Wolmaransstad, Transvaal, South Africa. He was a bachelor living in Johannesburg at the time of the marriage.[3]

William followed the Roman Catholic faith. He was described as having blue eyes, fair skin and fair hair. He stood at 5 feet 4 inches tall.[2] In 1923 William was employed as a Telephone Faultman.[4]

In his marriage record his age is listed as 38-years-old, which indicates a birth year of 1876. This conflicts with his baptism records which indicate his birth year as 1874.
