Biography

Barney Chisholm is a part of US Black heritage.

Barney Chisholm was born about 1828, probably in Kentucky. He has not been found living on any census, but he died in April 1880, and is therefore listed in that year's Mortality Schedule.^[1]

Barney was married to Violette (Rodgers) Chisholm (1828-aft.1910) by about 1853, as he is listed as the father of the first^[2], second^[3], and sixth^[4] of their children still alive in 1880.^[5] Violette had eleven children, six surviving as of 1900. It is assumed that Barney was the father of all of these children. Violette's six surviving children are:^[5]

• Alice Chisholm (1868-1941)
• Johny Chisholm (abt.1872-aft.1880)

• Joanna (Chisholm) Douglas (1875-1962)

Barney was a farmer and landowner in Rockwall County, Texas. He apparently lived there from about 1840 to his death in 1880.^[1] There are a number of deeds in his name there (in Rockwall or in Kaufman County, from which Rockwall split off in 1873 or 1874). In particular, he owned two or more farm properties in the few years before his death, and his widow farmed there through at least 1900, at which time she owned her farm outright.^[6]

Barney died in Rockwall County in Apr 1880.^[1]

Research Notes

Barney's birthplace is listed as Kentucky in the 1880 Mortality Schedule, and as Mississippi in the death certificates of two of his children, and as Geogia in the death certificate of another. None of these is either direct or highly convincing secondary evidence, but Kentucky seems to this researcher to be the most likely from the available evidence. It would probably have been reported by his wife in 1880.

There are a number of real estate deeds involving Barney, in both Rockwall County and Kaufman County (the county from which Rockwall split off in 1873-1874). The current researcher has not pursued these to formal reference citations or transcriptions. However, they're available for online search in Rockwall County at https://countyclerk.rockwallcountytexas.com/, and perhaps at a similar site in Kaufman County. The properties he owned include at least one farm property of 87.5 acres in Kaufman County, purchased 30 Apr 1872, and a 47-acre property in Rockwall County that he purchased on 15 Dec 1877. These might be nearby or even adjoining, given the county name change.

An attempt has been made to find Barney and Violet in the 1870 census, but without success. However, there is a family there with children having both of those names, Barney Chisum and Violet Chisum.^[7] They are of an age that suggests they might be named after an aunt and uncle in their family, who might be our Barney and Violet. This record also suggests a connection between the Chisholm and Ham families. This might be a good place to continue research on this couple.
