Mary Baty was born between 1866-1868 in Indiana.

She was the child of Charles Baty and Maggie Cowen, the niece of Civil War veteran George Cowen of the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, and the grandchild of physician Dr. Cyrus Cowen.
