Birth
Eric Bain was born in 1897 in Dunedin, New Zealand. He was the son of William Love Bain and Annie Lyall. [1]

Eric was one of nine children. His family resided at 20 Bridgeman Street in Kensington, Dunedin.

World War One
Four of Eric’s brothers enlisted for service in the First World War. John Douglas and Henry both signed up in 1915 and were sent overseas. John was discharged for medical reasons later that same year. Sadly, Henry Bain was killed in action on 15 September 1916 at the Battle of the Somme. His brothers Charles and James both enlisted in 1917 and also served in Europe. Both returned home after the war’s end.

Marriage
Eric married Amelia Peterson in 1920. Their son Henry Alan Bain was born in 1921.

Eric’s mother died in December 1926.

Death of son
Tragedy struck in January 1927, when Eric and Amelia's only son died at age six.

BAIN. —On January 5, 1927, at Dunedin, Henry Alan, dearly beloved only Infant son of Eric and Amelia Bain, of 39 Grosvenor Street, Dunedin South; aged six years. Deeply mourned. Private interment. —W. H. Cole, undertaker. [2]

Australia and return
In 1927, Eric, a 29-year old plasterer, and his wife Amelia, a 28 -year-old housewife, were passengers on board the SS Ceraki, which sailed from Bluff, New Zealand, for Melbourne, Australia, on the 23rd May 1927. Eric and Ameilia were destined for Melbourne. [3]

In 1930, Eric, a 32-year old plasterer, and his wife Amelia, a 31 -year-old home maker, were steerage-class passengers on board the SS Maheno, which sailed from Melbourne, Australia, on the 28th April 1930 to the port of Invercargill, arriving in Bluff, New Zealand. Eric and Ameilia were destined for Dunedin. [4]

Legal troubles
Eric was arrested in November 1930 and faced criminal charges in New Zealand Supreme Court. [5]

Eric’s father died in 1938. Eric and his siblings were mentioned in their father’s obituary. [6]

Death
Eric passed away in 1970 in New Zealand. [7]
