Birth
William Charles Bain was born in 1884 in Dunedin, New Zealand. He was the son of William Bain and Annie Lyall. [1] He was known as "Charles."
Charles was one of nine children. His family resided at 20 Bridgeman Street in Kensington, Dunedin.
World War One
Charles and three of his brothers enlisted for service in the First World War. Sadly, his brother Henry Bain was killed in action on 15 September 1916 at the Battle of the Somme.
Charles enlisted on 25 January 1917. At the time, he resided at 14 Tonks Grove, Cuba Street in Wellington. He was working as a compositor for the New Zealand Times. Charles served as a private with the 25th Reinforcements, B Company of the 2nd Battalion, Wellington Infantry Regiment. His service number was 46973. [1]
Charles was discharged on 2nd February 1920, after three years of service that included more than two years overseas. Charles was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. [1]

Marriage
In 1922, Charles married Adelaide Wheeler.
Charles’ mother died in 1926.
Charles’ father died in 1938. Charles and his siblings were mentioned in their father’s obituary. [2]
Widower
Charles’ wife Adelaide died in 1948. She was buried in Andersons Bay Cemetery in Andersons Bay, Dunedin City, Otago.
Death
Charles, a retired compositor, passed away on 10 June 1965 in Dunedin. [1] He was cremated and his ashes were buried with late wife in Andersons Bay Cemetery. [3]
William Charles Bain’s estate passed probate in 1965 in Dunedin. His last will and testament, dated 8 March 1963, named his surviving siblings and one friend as his beneficiaries. [4]
