Birth
John Douglas “Jack” Bain was born in 1890 in Dunedin, New Zealand. He was the son of William Love Bain and Annie Lyall. He was known as "Jack” according to his father’s obituary.
Jack was one of nine children. His family resided at 20 Bridgeman Street in Kensington, Dunedin.
World War One
Jack and three of his brothers enlisted for service in the First World War. Sadly, his brother Henry Bain was killed in action on 15 September 1916 at the Battle of the Somme.
Jack enlisted on 12 January 1915. At the time, he resided at 20 Bridgeman Street in Kensington, Dunedin. He was working as a fibrous plasterer. Jack served as a private with the 1st Battalion, Otago Infantry Regiment. His service number was 8/1698. Jack was discharged for medical reasons on 4 August 1915 after 205 days of service. At the end of the war, Jack was awarded the British War Medal. [1]
Jack’s mother died in 1926.
Marriage
Jack married Agnes Elizabeth Carmichael in 1927 in New Zealand.
Jack’s father died in 1938. Jack was recorded as residing in Napier in his father’s obituary. [2]
Death
John Douglas Bain passed away in 1964.
