John Bain, son of John Bain and Isobel "Waiter", was born about 1812 and baptised in Watten, Caithness, on 24 March 1812.^[1]

John was identified as the father of Elisabeth Bain on her birth and baptism record.^[2]

In 1861 John Bain was a farmer of 60 acres at Backless Dunn, in the parish of Watten. He lived there with his wife and children and employed 1 man, 4 women and a boy. One of these farm servants was John's nephew, John Sutherland.^[3]
