John Hall Bean was born January 14, 1837, in Mooresburg, Hawkins county, Tennessee, the son of John D Calvin Bean and Alice (Setser) Bean. John enlisted in the Union Army on June 19, 1862 and was discharged June 5, 1865. John served in Company H. 1st Regular Tennessee Calvary. He was in action at the battle of Cumberland Gap, wounded in the neck at the battle of Mossy Creek on December 29, 1863 and had a fractured elbow at the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, in September 1863.
On August 15, 1865, in Hawkins county, John married Sarah Leah (Brooks) Williams, daughter of William Brooks and the widow of Eli Williams. Sarah was born July 10, 1839, in Hawkins county, and had three children by her first husband, who John raised to adulthood. Those children are:

Sarah died on February 26, 1870, in Fayetteville, Arkansas and was buried in the Mount Zion Cemetery. On July 25, 1875, in Cleburn, Texas, John married, secondly, Mary Ann Martin. Children of John and Mary Ann are:
