John Yoder Jr. was born 29 April 1805,[1] probably in Upper Saucon Township (where his father owned land and was likely enumerated with his family there in the 1790 census.[2]) His parents were John Yoder and Susanna Meyer.
His father's household was enumerated in Upper Saucon in 1820 and the record is consistent with John Jr. living with the family.[3]
On 7 January, 1829, John Sr. transferred a substantial amount of land to his sons, including John Jr.[4] and John's younger brothers, Peter and Jacob. (Presumably there are records also transferring land to son Joseph.)
John Sr's will, proved on 14 December 1839, [5] left modest bequests to his children. John Jr. was left $100 "as his full share out of my real and personal estate," the family bible, a “Marder” Book (probably Martyr), and a clock and case. Based on the deeds of 1829, it's assumed that he transferred most of his land to his sons at that time.
John married a woman named Catherine and her name appears in an 1856 land sale with John.[6] Although it can be difficult to identify all the various Yoders with similar names, the 1856 deed specifies that it is land "being part of same premises John Yodder bought Jan 7, 1829."
