Biography

John was born in 1863 in Ripley, Derbyshire, England.

He left Derbyshire for Coventry in the mid 1890's, probably to find work. Here he met his wife, widow Lucy Deeming (Nee Mills). John was lodging in Spon Street, Coventry with Lucy and her four children by her late husband Arthur Deeming, a Watch Maker who died in 1895.

In 1896 John "Wheldon" as he incorrectly signed his name on the marriage entry, and Lucy Deeming, formerly Lucy Mills, were wed at Coventry Register Office.

By 1899 John must have moved the family to Birmingham as his first child (Edith May Wheeldon) with Lucy his now wife, was born in Coventry in February 1898.

In 1899 John's father William Wheeldon came to stay with them in Birmingham after the September death of his wife Martha (Nee Handford) and died there himself by December of that year.

Due to Lucy's only son by deceased husband Arthur Deeming, William Deeming who was 16 years old when the 1901 Census was taken, must have been the only person there to give the information to the census collector. The names of the whole family are given as Deeming and not both Deeming and Wheeldon. Which made finding this census very difficult. I can only assume that William didn't react well to being forcibly moved to Birmingham from his childhood place of origin in Coventry.

John & Lucy Wheeldon had four of five children survive according to the 1911 Census.

He passed away in Birmingham, Warwickshire (as it was) in 1933 a widower.
