Biography

Joseph Wenger, 1767.12.19 1840.4.22, G183 <24,2843> Born near Chambersburg, Franklin Co., PA. Married Catherine (Katrina Huber) Hoover, 1764~ 1837.12.12, (i1764~) <24,2843> in 1789 or 1790. Moved with his daughter Nancy to a farm a little north of Cave Spring near Roanoke Co., VA in 1833 to be near his other children (son Martin) after the death of his wife. (RLW, not found in VA in 1820, 30, 40 census, but found in Letterkenny Twp., Franklin Co., PA in 1820 and 1830 and Guilford Twp. in 1840. 1820, p. 124. 1830, p. 290. 1840, Guilford Twp., p. 299. Perhaps continues to spend time in PA). Executor of his father's will. It is believed that he was left property by Daniel Sollenberger, 1773.12.25 1821.1.26, 0 See Will Book C, page 519, 1821 Chambersburg, PA. Purchased a farm near Big Lick (Big Lick is an older name for Roanoke, Roanoke being a sea shell used by the Indians as currency, this from DW). He was said to be a member of the River Brethren Church and was remembered as being severely plain, wearing no buttons on his clothes. He was also remembered as being Mennonite. All of his children were members of the Church of the Brethren, then called the German Baptist Brethren Church and were associated with the Peters Creek Congregation. After Katrina's death a girl that they had earlier taken to raise cared for the home. She then married and Joseph moved to live with his son Martin near Poague's Mill. Died in Botetourt (now Roanoke) Co., VA. Originally buried in the graveyard between the old poor house of Roanoke Co. and the river (current location of Virginia Western Community College) (the cem. was moved to Roanoke about 1900). The information about his family other than Martin Winger was collected by Daniel O. Winger and Roger D. Winger in or around the 1920's, never published. C. Pauline Randel states that his will was probated 1838 but she also gives his dates as 1760 1840. Birth date has been reported as 1767.11.19. RDW gives that his stone is spelled Wanger and that spelling is used in his will
