Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Annie (Watson) Love is a part of US Black heritage.

Anna Watson was born into slavery in August 1852, in Aberdeen & Indianolla, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Matilda Watson.[1]

Anna married Burrell Love on 20 November 1871, in Monroe County, Mississippi, United States. [2] They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 3 daughters.

Anna died on 29 August 1917, in Danville, Montour, Pennsylvania, United States, at the age of 65, and was buried in Danville, Montour, Pennsylvania, United States in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.[1]

Slave Owner

Anna's owner was likely one of two brothers Asa or Rufus Watson. Asa owned 48 slaves on the 1860 schedule; Rufus owned 34. [3]

Research Notes

It may be impossible to know who owned Anna. There were just a few Watsons in Monroe County, Mississippi. Dr. Henry Lewis Gates suggests that Anna must have been owned by one of the brothers.[3]

I updated the Find A Grave reference to bypass Ancestry's index. However, when looking at that memorial I noticed that it shows an obituary which states that Anne was a life-long resident of Danville, conflicting with the biography above. I'm pretty unfamiliar with this individual and USBH research in general, but figured I'd pass along that something feels amiss with this profile for someone more skilled to look into it.

I appreciate that you added the categories. I was not clear about them in January.

Hi Shirleen, I removed Aberdeen & Indianolla, Mississippi as the birth location. This doesn't exist. There is an Aberdeen in Monroe County and an Indianola in Sunflower County. Also, please use the top level "USBH Heritage Exchange" category on all profiles you create for enslaved ancestors so the Checklist Team can check the categories. I've updated the categories for Anna. Thanks, Emma
