Biography

Hugh Wardlaw was a Virginia colonist.

Hugh Wardlaw, a son of William Wardlaw and Jeanette Harper, was born around 1740 in Augusta County, Virginia. On 22 Sep 1763, he married Elizabeth Coulter and they moved to Ninety-Six District (later known as Abbeville County), South Carolina.[1] They had twelve children:

  6. Margaret (1773-1853)

  8. Robert (1778-1812)

  12. Agnes (1789-1807)

A land grant, dated Nov 1769 for100 acres, is recorded in the Secretary of State's office at Columbia, South Carolina.[2][1]

He was a Captain of the Whig Militia in the Southern Army during the Revolutionary War[3], and recognized as a patriot.[4][5]

Respected in his community, he was an Elder in his church and was a Judge of the County Court for Abbeville from 1797 to 1800.[1]

He was a resident and enumerated as head of household in the first U.S. Census for Abbeville County, 1790.[6]

Elizabeth died in 1790, and Hugh remarried, to Mary Miller Logan, a widow.[1]

Hugh passed away on 14 Nov 1802. He wrote his will 9 Nov 1802.Hugh Wardlaw will, 9 Nov 1802[7]

Hugh Wardlaw was buried in Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Donalds, Abbeville County, South Carolina, [8] where his headstone honors his military service.[9] His will was probated on 9 Nov 1802 in Abbeville, South Carolina.[10]
