Biography

Susanna was born about 1738. She passed away after her child John Veatch was born in 1766 and before 1776, when her husband was reported in the census with his second wife, Elizabeth.

According to a family history, Susanna Veatch, daughter of John and Grace (Masters) Veatch, married Benjamin Gatton, May 30, 1759, the same date on which her sister Elizabeth married James Gatton. As is the case of the latter, the father, John Veatch, for a nominal sum, conveyed to Susannah, wife of Benjamin Gatton, a part of a tract of land called 'The Pheasant's Nest,' containing 100 acres. Deed recorded 30th May, 1759 (Frederick Co. Deeds, liber F, folio 724)."[1] The deed states: on 30 May 1759, Susannah Gatton of Frederick, Maryalnd, wife of Benjamin Gatton, requested that a deed be recorded, in which her father, John Veatch of Frederick, Maryland conveyed to her for seven shillings a parcel of land known as the Pheasant's Nest, containing about 100 acres. Grace Veatch, wife of John, acknowledged the sale.[2]

The 1776 census of Frederick, Maryland reported the two children of Benjamin and Susanna Gatton: Phillinder 15 and John 10, in the record of Benjamin and Elizabeth Gatton.[3]
