Vashti Murphy was an American educator and community leader, one of the founding members of Delta Sigma Theta, the historically black sorority.
Lula Vashti Turley was born in 1885. She was the daughter of Hamilcar Turley and Ida Francis.
She was an American educator and community leader. She graduated Howard University, with honors, in 1913. She was a teacher in the Washington, DC schools.
She was the president of the Women's Auxiliary of the church and was a founder of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was the first president of the Women's Auxiliary of Crownsville State Hospital and found of the Philomathian Club.
She married Carl J Murphy in 1916 in Washington, DC. [1] Carl's family were publishers of the Afro-American newspapers. They had five daughters:
She passed away in 1960.[2]
