Carl was born in 1889. He passed away in 1967. He is the son of John Murphy, Sr and Martha Howard.

Carl was an editor, journalist, publisher, civil rights activist, and educator in Baltimore, Maryland. His family owned the Afro-American newspapers.

His parents were strong advocates for African-Americans to be heavily educated. His mother felt that Carl was her most scholarly child (out of 10 children). He graduated Howard University, with honors, in 1911. In 1913, he received his MA from Harvard University. He became head of his family newspaper business in 1922. He had a 49 year tenure as editor and head of the Afro-American Company.

The newspaper developed it into one of the largest circulated black newspapers in the nation. Carl was groundbreaking in using "colored reporters, journalists and photographers" to report on WWII, including his daughter, Elizabeth.

He married Lulu "Vashti" Turley in 1916 in Washington, DC. They met while she was a student and he was her German teacher at Howard University, Washington, DC. They had five daughters:

  1. Martha "Bettye" Elizabeth (Murphy) Moss (1917-1998), a journalist, war correspondent, and editor (1917-1998)
  2. Ida Ann (Murphy) Peters (1918-1996)
  3. Carlita (Murphy) Jones (1921-2006), twin with Vashti (1921- )
  4. Vashti, twin with Carlita (1921-1981), a member of the 6888th Battalion in WWII
  5. Frances (Murphy) Campbell
