Albert James 'Bert' Thiess CBE AO was born on 20th January 1913 at Drayton, Queensland, Australia. He was the eighth son of Henry Thiess and Mary Rutsch.[1] He attended Drayton State School.
Together with Cecil, Stan, and Pat, Bert joined their brother, Leslie in a sizeable road-building contract in 1933. In 1939 the firm became Thiess Bros, and was incorporated as a proprietary company in 1946; eventually growing into a group of thirty or more interlocked enterprises.[2]
Bert married Vera Horn on 12th June 1939 at Queensland.[3] Their children were Kenneth (1940-62), Neil (1942-2011) and Daphne (c1944-).
After the Second World War, Bert became the Victorian director of Thiess and began to build the business up there. He also worked on the drainage of farmlands in Millicent, South Australia.
Bert was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Year's Honours 1982.[4] In the Queen's Birthday Honours 2004 he was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for 'service to civil engineering, particularly project management in relation to major undertakings in regional Queensland and to the community'.[5]
He retired in the late 1970s and settled down to enjoy his family and restore tractors.
He passed away, just weeks before turning 98 years of age, on 18th December 2010 at Sunnybank Hills, Queensland. He was buried at Mount Gravatt Cemetery, Macgregor, Queensland.[6] He was survived by his wife, son Neil and daughter Daphne, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
