Biography

Baila was born October 25, 1880, in Pušalotas, Panevėžys, Lithuania, then part of the Russian Empire. Her parents were Max Sykes[1] and Rebecca (Finkelstein) Sykes.[2]

Baila immigrated to the United States about 1898 (see Research Notes), after which she was known as Belle.

Belle married Ira Bresnick in Clinton, Pennsylvania, United States[1] and they had at least seven children (see Research Notes).

In 1910, Ira (shown as Ike, age 33) and Belle (shown as Bell, age 29) lived in Jay, Elk, Pennsylvania, United States with children Max (age 7), Sadie (age 5), Ruth (age 2), and Rose (age 0). Belle's nephew David B Sykes (age 16) also lived with the family.[2]

In 1920, Ira (age 42) and Belle (shown as Bell, age 39) lived in Huston, Clearfield, Pennsylvania, United States with children Max (age 16), Sadie (age 15), Sylvia (age 12), Rose (shown as Rosie, age 9), Simmie (age 7), Samuel (age 6), and Donald (age 3). Belle's mother Rebecca Sykes (shown as Rebecka, age 81) also lived with the family.[3]

In 1930, Ira (age 54) and Belle (shown as Bell, age 49) lived in Williamsport, Lycoming, Pennsylvania, United States with children Sylvia (age 22), Rose (age 20), Simmie (shown as Sunnie, age 17), Samuel (age 16), and Donald (age 13).[4]

In 1940, Ira (age 64) and Belle (age 59) lived in Williamsport, Lycoming, Pennsylvania, United States with children Rose (age 29), Simmie (age 27), and Samuel (shown as Sam, age 25).[5]

In 1950, Ira (shown as Ina, age 73) and Belle (age 70) lived at 211 Sheffield Street in Philipsburg, Centre, Pennsylvania, United States in the home of son Samuel (age 36), his wife Bertha (age 31), and their son Steven. Samuel was a building material merchant.[6]

Belle died December 1, 1964 and was buried in the Ohev Sholom Cemetery in Williamsport. Lycoming, Pennsylvania, United States,[7]

Research Notes

  • 1899 in the 1910 census[2]
  • 1902 in the 1830 census,[4] however this cannot be correct because Belle was married in 1901 in Clinton, Pennsylvania, United States.[1]
