Obituaries

PASSING OF THE PIONEERS. MR. ARCHIBALD SUFFOLK.[7]

Still another of the grand old pioneer band— Mr. Archie Suffolk— passed away to his eternal reward early on Wednesday last. The deceased gentleman reached within a few days of 74 years, about 65 of which he spent in this district. He was born at Kiama, and came to Shoalhaven with his parents (the late Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Suffolk) when quite a small lad. [NB: Elen died before their arrival] The family settled at Tomerong, and there the children grew up and received their education. When the late Mr. Archie Suffolk reached man's estate he took up land, and did a lot of pioneering work, transforming the bush into cultivation and dairying land. He also engaged in the timber trade, drawing logs to the local sawmills with teams. Indeed, he was noted for his bushcraft. Always a steady, industrious man, he finally acquired a considerable area of land some distance westward of Tomerong, where he established a comfortable home and where he resided up to the time of his death. As the result of strenuous work in his younger days he suffered from strained heart, and this latterly became worse and ted to dropsy, which finally carried him off. He was a fine type of man, honest and honorable in all his dealings, and one whose word was this bond. He was twice married, the first family consisting of four sons and four daughters, all grown up. His second wife was a daughter of the late Mr. D. Glanville, one of the early and respected pioneers of this end of Shoalhaven. She survives her husband but had no issue. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, the mortal remains being interred in the Church of England portion of the Nowra general cemetery. In the absence of the rector, Rev. T. Terry, the Rev. J. H. G. Auld, B.A. (Presbyterian), conducted the service at the grave, and afterwards paid a high tribute to the sterling character of the deceased gentleman, to his good qualities as a husband and father, his worth as a neighbor and friend, and his attributes as a man. The large gathering around the grave testified to the general esteem in which the deceased was held.
