Biography

Bell/Isabella Suffolk was born in 1854 near Kiama. She was the daughter of Joseph Suffolk and Elen Ferguson.^[1] She was probably named after her aunt Isabella aka Bell Ferguson

Isabella married Reuben Mison at Terara in 1874.^[2]

She died in childbirth on the 6th of June, 1876. A memorial poem published on the 17th of June (see below) seems to indicate that she and the baby were buried together: Beside of one she lov'd so dear.^[3]

Reuben remarried to Isabella's sister Sarah in 1879.

In Memory of Isabella Mison, died on 6th June, 1876

The bitter blasts have cut the flower

While yet in early bloom,

And laid our well-loved friend

In the sad silent tomb.

Those looks that once so joyous seem'd,

Now wear a sadder gloom

Renew our mournful thoughts, and cause

Our tears to flow again.

Sweet shine the snow-white buds

In yonder garden laid ;

Their beauties to our gaze unfold,

And fragrant sweets exhale.

So bloom'd this fair and lovely rose

In all its present days ;

Exciting artless love and joy,

As pure as morning dews.

In childlike innocence she lived,

And closed her short career;

And now is laid in blissful days,

Beside of one she lov'd so dear.

Yes, she is call'd ! death ever takes

The dearest, and lays them low ;

Parting those ties by love entwin'd

In this our world below.
