Biography

Elen Ferguson Suffolk was named after her grandmother, Elen Ferguson. Her birth was registered at Shoalhaven in 1871.^[1]

Elen was the mother of an illegitimate daughter, Verlie, who was registered as 'Efsten Suffolk' in Sydney in 1905.^[2] Later she went by the name of Mrs Efsten^[3][4]

Elen died at the Tweed District Hospital, Murwillumbah, 14 April 1946. She had been living with her sister Sarah May Hawken (nee Suffolk) and family. Elen/Helen's funeral notices gave her name as Miss Helen Ferguson Efsten Suffolk. ^{[5][6] [7][8][9]}

• I haven't located a Mr Efsten (Initially thought that Elen's Mrs. Efsten alias might have been the legal wife of Elen's partner), so the Efsten name may be an alias.

SUFFOLK The death occurred in the Tweed District Hospital, Murwillumbah, early yesterday morning, after a brief illness, of Miss Helen Ferguson Efsten Suffolk, aged 74 years. She was born at Nowra, and had been living with her sister, Mrs C. Hawken, at Tweed Heads, for approximately six years. Prior to that she resided in Murwillumbah. Miss Suffolk leaves three sisters and three brothers. The sisters in addition to Mrs Hawken, are Mesdames E. Woolley (Lismore) and Mrs J. Kelly (Jervis Bay) and the brothers are Messrs George (Ballina), Henry (Ballina) and Archibald Suffolk (Nowra ) . The funeral will move from the Methodist Church, Murwillumbah, today after a service commencing at 11 am, to the new general cemetery, Murwillumbah.

The funeral, of the late Miss Helen Ferguson Efsten Suffolk, of Tweed Heads, moved from Murwillumbah Methodist Church yesterday and was conducted in the Methodist portion of the general cemetery, Murwillumbah. The Rev. R. S. Walker officiated at the church and at the graveside. 'The cortege was representative and many floral tributes were received. The pallbearers were Messrs Henry Suffolk (brother), Charles Hawken (brother-in-law), Eric Hawken (nephew), A. P. Gibson, Ron Abernethy, and Moss Bonus. Messrs J. Trivett, Hawkey and J. Withers carried the wreaths. Mr Ien Holston had charge of the funeral arrangements.
