I was born 26 February 1934 in Roff, Oklahoma, the first child of Ray Strong and Rosa Lee Bunyard Strong, first grandchild of Toliver and Myrtle Strong. I started school in Hickory, Oklahoma and by the time I graduated from high school I had attended 13 schools. Considering that I was at two schools more than two years each shows that there was lots of moving about and that sometimes there were several schools in one year. This had a big impact on my sense of home and permanence. It may also have influenced my love of travel, of history, culture and genealogy.
In third grade I read and reread a set of books in my classroom about children in other countries and I tried to imagine visiting all those places. In my adult life I have traveled widely, independently and covered the globe.
As a teenager I became interested in "where I came from" and I remember asking my maternal grandmother that question. She said, "Well, I think we're just a Heinz 57", which is so far from true that I wish I could tell her. She has the richest heritage and didn't even know it.
As I was getting ready to enter Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma my dad accepted a promotion with the oil company he worked for to go to Wyoming, literally like moving to a foreign country in those days. Oil had been discovered in the Big Horn Basin near Yellowstone and fields were being opened up. The seven of us drove three days in a sedan, a trip we made several summers thereafter to visit family down South.
I finished high school in Powell and went to the University of Wyoming where I earned a Bachelor's Degree and became a teacher. After a particularly hard winter, I was ready to leave and applied for and was hired to teach in the Philippine Islands for the Department of Defense at Clark Air Force Base. It was my introduction to Asia, a profound influence on me, and it is where I met my husband. Fast forward to an eventual return to California and two children. Still teaching, I earned a Master's Degree at Cal State Fullerto and half a PhD at UCLA which was never completed.
After retiring from my school district in Orange County, I worked for seven years as the California Representative for the Great Books Foundation in Chicago. This was another profound experience, working with authors, being immersed in literature, the publishing business and the richness of Chicago. When both my children moved north to Silicon Valley I decided to join them. I have cherished this time with my children and grandchildren and being part of their everyday lives.
My love of painting and producing art was fully realized after retirement when I became associated with a gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona providing work for the gallery and doing commission pieces. I went back and forth for several years, spending time in the gallery and with clients. Another invigorating experience. My passion for genealogy has been lifelong and has led me into several lineage groups where I share love of history and family stories with like-minded people. The blossoming of DNA knowledge in the past two decades has added to the excitement. I look forward every day to learning something new.
