Biography

According to Erwin Assmann's scheme for the children of Friedrich Barbarossa and Beatrix von Burgund[1] Philipp's birth took place about February or March 1177 at which time the imperial court resided in Pavia. In any case his birth was before 26 Jul 1178, the date he was first mentioned as an infant in a document.[2] As the youngest son he was destined for a clerical career and from 26 Apr 1189[3] on he signs as provost of Aachen. In one document by Emperor Heinrich VI from 1191 he is designated as elected bishop of Würzburg.[4] But since July 1193 he appears only as frater imperatoris,[5] indicating his return to lay status, and in 1195 Heinrich VI installed him as duke of Tuscany and married him to Eirene Angelina, daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Isaac Angelos and widow of Ruggero d'Altavilla.[6][7] After the death of his brother Konrad in 1196 he was made Herzog von Schwaben[8] and in 1198 elected king.[9] He was murdered by Otto von Wittelsbach in 1208.[10] In 1900 the imperial tombs in the Speyer dome were opened and an examination of Philipp's remains, particularly his teeth, showed him to have been in his early 30s.[11]

"Philip was preparing to crush the last flicker of the Welf rebellion in Brunswick-Lüneburg, when he proceeded to Bamberg, in order to participate as a guest at the wedding of his niece Countess Beatrice II of Burgundy with Duke Otto of Merania on 21 June 1208.[12] After the ceremony, Philip retired to his rooms, where he was assaulted and murdered by the Bavarian count palatine Otto VIII.[1] The pregnant queen Irene Angelina fled to Hohenstaufen Castle where she miscarried and died shortly afterwards. Otto of Wittelsbach escaped the Hohenstaufen henchmen.[13]"
