Welcome to the Profile Improvement Project Category Team

Mission: The Category team will review profiles currently in top level categories to determine whether they can be moved to a Project category or to a location category of the same type.
Some of these categories are gatekeepers and only to be used by the Projects. Others are for things needed by non-Project profiles. Both types need to have a lower level Category added to the profile.
For instance 'Estimated Date' categories shown with square brackets, ([[:Category:Estimated Date]]) would be changed to {{'Estimated Date|Death}} shown with curly brackets. That would add the Category 'Estimated Death Date' but also the Research Box. These profiles will then be seen by applicable Projects and/or WikiTreers working on a specific category. When adding lower-level parameters for Category: Estimated Date, please be sure to use the sub-category names exactly as they already exist.
Task List
  • Start at the Category:Maintenance Categories page and click a sub-Category
    • Note that Categories have three numbers within parentheses. The first number indicates the number of sub-categories, the second number shows the number of profiles within the Category, and the third number shows the number of FSPs for the Category. You will be working with the middle number. The goal will be to reduce that number to 0 for each Category.
  • When the sub-Category page you chose to work on opens, scroll down to the 'Person Profiles'. These are the profiles that need to have a lower level category added and the High Level Category that is already on the profile removed.
    • Some of the lower level categories to choose from are among the Sub-Categories shown at the top of that page.
    • There may already be lower level categories that do not show under Sub-Categories on this page. For instance, under sub-categories in the Category:Conflated Profiles you will note that many of the states in the United States are not shown. But there are sub-categories already created for most (if not all) of the individual states in the U.S. Therefore, more research into the sub-categories may be needed.
    • Try using the Category Picker button to find a Project or location category of the same name. See How to Categorize for information about the Category Picker.
  • If you found that the profile did not fall under a Project, you are welcome to improve the profile yourself. If you don't have time or inclination, the fact that you have moved the profile to a lower level will help those interested find it for improvement. Thank you!
