Can You Edit a Profile Under a Hold Request?

Profiles are not owned by their Profile Managers. Members cannot prevent other members from editing profiles. The only exceptions are for privacy on modern profiles and for policies agreed-upon by the community, such as pre-1500 and pre-1700 restrictions and controls on Project-Protected Profiles.

However, communication before editing is often recommended in our community, and members or projects can make a special {{Hold Request}} in the limited circumstances described below.

These requests are like an extended form of draft protection, our system for preventing more than one member from editing a profile at the same time so that their edits don't conflict. The Hold Request tells other members that there is active research or offline work, or there is another special reason why changing the profile now could cause a conflict, such as when a Mentor or Trail Guide is using the profile to demonstrate changes.

Details of the Hold Request are always given in a Research Notes section. These notes may say that only certain types of edits would be problematic, or that communication is requested.

Rejecting a Request

These are requests, not commands. However, courtesy is in our Honor Code, and unless your edit is urgent and communication is impossible, it may be interpreted as discourtesy.

On the other hand, you may find Hold Requests that are used improperly, perhaps in violation of the usage requirements explained below.

In either case, start at Help:Problems with Members.

Hold Request Categories

For your convenience, Hold Requests automatically appear in personal categories or project maintenance categories. Examples:

Usage Requirements

  • The individual or project making the Hold Request must be identified.
  • Every Hold Request needs an end date.
    • Individuals may set end dates for up to one week away.
    • Projects may set end dates up to one month away.
      • Learning programs managed by top-level projects may set end dates up to six months away.
    • End dates can be updated at any time. Therefore, Hold Requests can essentially be infinite if the profile is edited periodically.
  • Hold Requests must only be used on a limited number of profiles.
    • Individuals may have up to five open Hold Requests.
    • Projects may have up to 50.
      • Learning programs managed by top-level projects may have up to 250.
  • Every Hold Request must be explained in a Research Notes section on the profile.

See Template:Hold Request for instructions on placing the {{Hold Request}} Research Note Box.
