The purpose of this team is:

To locate sources for unsourced Nordic profiles. The primary goal is to locate at least one primary source for each of the currently unsourced Nordic profiles, and to add a complete and precise citation for each source that is found. If you enjoy searching through the digital archives in a hunt for that one elusive source, then you would be a great asset to the Nordic Sourcerers Team.

What do members of this team do?

We improve profiles by adding sources to them in accordance with the WikiTree and the Nordic Project sourcing guidelines. Some of these guidelines include:

  • Using primary sources when they are available.
  • Using inline source citations when possible.
  • Including links to online sources.
  • Using the {{Unsourced}} templates to manage unsourced profiles.
  • Using Research Notes when appropriate.

Some members of the Nordic Sourcerers Team also participate in the WikiTree Sourcerers Challenges. Any work done on unsourced Nordic profiles can count towards your monthly challenge goals.

Steps To A Well Sourced Profile

1. Pick A Profile:

You can pick any unsourced Nordic Project profile from the time period and location of your choice. See the section on Locating Unsourced Profiles for more information.

2. Locate Reliable Sources:

The ideal goal is to locate a reliable source for each fact on a profile. The minimal goal is to locate at least one reliable source that corroborates a single life event and/or relationship listed on the profile. There are two categories of sources that should be considered when doing research:
Primary sources are considered the most reliable. They are original documents that were recorded at the time of an event and have not been altered or distorted by third parties. Examples of primary sources include birth and death registration records, parish household records, and original copies of wills.
Secondary sources are less reliable than primary sources and should not be relied upon. They can, however, be a helpful aid for locating primary sources. They are sources that contain information that is presented after the fact, by third parties who may not have been a witness to the event. Examples of secondary sources include newspaper articles, oral histories provided by family members, and family trees that have been compiled by others.

3. Evaluate The Data:

Once a primary source has been located that may match the profile being worked on, the data should be evaluated for accuracy and consistency. Has enough research been done to reasonably ensure that the correct person is represented in the source? Do the dates, locations, and expected relationships from the source match the information on the profile? If not, then further research will be needed. If the data does match, caution should still be used to ensure that the source does not reference another individual with a similar name in a similar location. This is where locating multiple sources that corroborate one another becomes very useful. The more sources that are located, the greater the certainty about the data listed on a profile.

4. Record The Data:

Once a source has been evaluated as a match for the current profile, the data should be entered into the available data fields. If there is already data in the fields it should be checked for accuracy and any necessary changes should be made. In particular, the location data fields should be as complete as possible, using the Nordic Project location name guidelines. For more information about data fields, please review the following help pages:

5. Record The Source:

Once you have a reliable source, it is critical that a reference to that source be included on the profile. Some guidelines for recording the source are:
  • The source citation should be as complete and concise as possible.
  • The source citation should include a link to any online sources.
  • The source citation should link to freely available repositories when possible.
  • The source citation should be included "inline", in the biography section, when possible.
These steps will allow the fastest and easiest access to the sources and will make the citations as concise and clear as possible for other researchers.
Sources should be added in accordance with the WikiTree and the Nordic Project sourcing guidelines. For more information about sourcing, please review the following help pages:

6. Add Research Notes:

It is always helpful to future researchers to know what research has already been conducted on a profile. The Research Notes section of the profile is a great place to add notes about what research has been done and any other useful information such as discrepancies, missing data, or unusual circumstances. This will help the next researcher work effectively without needing to repeat research that has already been done.
If you have searched for sources and have not been able to locate any, you should make a note of where you unsuccessfully searched in the Research Notes section. For example, a note stating something like "The Bäckaby Parish birth records were searched for the years 1891 to 1893 and a birth record for Johan Luur was not located" would be helpful for future researchers.

7. Update The Unsourced Template:

Once a profile has been sourced, the Templates and Categories associated with that profile should be updated accordingly. There are two common ways of designating that a profile needs sources:
Unsourced Templates are used to show the big orange banner on a profile indicating that "This profile lacks source information. Please add sources that support the facts." When the profile is in edit mode, you can view the code that adds the Unsourced Template to the profile. For example, on a Sweden profile, you should see {{Unsourced|Sweden}} just above the ==Biography== tag.
Unsourced Categories are used to add a profile to a readily accessible grouping of unsourced profiles, but does not add the orange banner. When the profile is in edit mode, you can view the code that adds the Unsourced Category to the profile. For example, on a Sweden profile, you should see [[Category:Sweden, Unsourced Profiles]] just above the ==Biography== tag.
If the profile has been completely sourced, then both the Template and/or Category snippets can be removed. This will remove the profile from the Unsourced Profiles Report, and will no longer show the banner on the profile or the profile in the Unsourced Category. On the other hand, if you have only begun sourcing the profile and it can use more work, then it should be added to a new Maintenance Category that indicates the type of work still needed, and the country the profile belongs to.
Some examples that could be used are the "Needs Birth Record" or "Needs More Records" Categories, among others. To add the "Needs More Records" category to a Sweden profile, the [[Category:Sweden, Needs More Records]] snippet would replace the previously used Unsourced Template or Category snippets.

8. Extra Credit:

The profile has now been sourced, but there is always more that can be done. Some available options are to improve the biography and to connect the profile to other profiles. The Profile Improvement Project Page provides more information on ways to further improve profiles.
You can also paricipate in the WikiTree Sourcerers' Challenges by joining their project. The profiles that you source for the Nordic Project may also qualify for receiving points in their challenges. Learn more at the WikiTree Sourcerers Project Page.

Locating Unsourced Profiles

Unsourced profiles can be found by using WikiTree+.
Click on one of the following country links and then select the blue "Get profiles" button to generate a report:
Adding a century to the search field will limit the results to people born in that century. These are examples used for centuries: 17Cen, 18Cen, 19Cen, 20Cen (do not add the comma to search field).
