Biography

Norwegian Native
Aksel Horvei was born in Norway

I was born in Oslo, grew up in neighbouring Bærum. Cand. real. (MSc) in geophysics in 1973. Moved to Stavanger at the age of 33. I started genealogy around 1990. After I retired in 2009, I have been spending most of my time with genealogy.

My father's father came from Evanger (today part of Voss) in Hordaland with his father's ancestors from the Voss area. My great-grandfather was a travelling salesman and married a woman from Nesna in Nordland, but also with tiny roots in Trondheim. My father's mother came from Bergen, and her ancestors came from Voss, Inner Sogn and Sunnfjord. My mother's father should have inherited a farm in Romedal (now Stange) in Hedmark that had been in the family for 600 years. My grandfather, however, decided to give the farm to his brother in exchange for more education, so he took a doctorate in chemistry in Zürich, Switzerland. In 1939 he was probably the first Norwegian who took colour slides in Bergen. (http://marcus.uib.no/instance/collection/2ec7fc832fea095773c8af3082b868f7f4d442cc). I have written a "book": "Slekta fra Busvold gjennom 600 år". (Since the document contains hundreds of hyperlinks directly into scanned primary sources, it cannot be published as a printed book.) His mother had her ancestors from Gausdal area in Oppland. My mother's mother came from Flekkefjord in Vest-Agder with ancestors also from southern Rogaland, from Mandal and Kristiansand areas in Vest-Agder and also from Thisted in Denmark. So all-in-all I come from all over Norway. Among other things I have collected a lot of hyperlinks to probate, deed and court records from the 17th and 18th centuries from all these areas. My database contains more than 11000 people mostly from 17th and 18th century.

I have done the Big-Y with FTDNA.

My Y-haplogroup is G-Z39539[1] (formed 1450 ybp, TMRCA 275 ybp)[2] (also called G-FGC37630 and G-BY144476[3]) with earliest known Y-ancestor from Evanger in Voss, Hordaland and possibly further from Dale in Vaksdal, Hordaland. It is said that this subgroup, primarily found in coastal areas W and NW of Bergen, has celtic origin (viking slaves from Ireland?). We are 3 Norwegians with no known common ancestor in this group.

My mtDNA-haplogroup is U5a1i1 with earliest known mt-ancestor from Lund, Rogaland, Norway

Thank you for adding links to my family members' church records. As someone who does not speak Norwegian, it's a huge help!

Thank you for adding the sources to my ancestor’s Ragnhilde, Gjertrud and Arne Tostensen/Torstensen Thompson’s family. It has helped a lot because I have little time to add more information and sources here. I have been doing all my work on ancestry.com for the most part. So I appreciate it when people help out here. Thank you very much Aksel.

AkseI I can't thank you enough for all the information on my great-grand parents in Norway. My dad was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. My daughter and I went to Norway in 1999. I saw Hansen/Hanson on your family tree. My grandmother was Christine Bertine Hansen born 11 Jun 1880 Storjord Farm Meloy Communne, Nordland Fylke, Norway and her dad was Jon Edvard Hansen. He was born 23 Feb 1852 Kilvik Farm, Meloy Commune, Nordland Fulke, Norway. I will be 73 years old in 11 days and researching my family trees are so important to me. Again thank you so much Aksel. I'm not having any luck trying to do a gedcom file to add to Wiki. :-(. Have a wonderful week Aksel. Our Minnesota football team are the Vikings. Karen
Thank you, Karen, for the kind words! I am more than willing to continue helping you in your search for Norwegian ancestor.

Hi Aksel

I noticed you have been merging away profiles with the explanation “ … is a fictitious person.”

Please see [Help: Recycling WikiTree IDs]

Many thanks Wendy

Are you saying that all those profiles, which some overambitious "genealogists" have given names and very precise birth dates already in the 17th century, should just be renamed Unknown and detached from their created parents/siblings/children? Or should they be left as fictitious siblings to real persons? Or just detached from all others?

I just noticed that you thanked me for posting the long quotation from Giants in the Earth, about Norwegian names. I'm so glad that someone read and appreciated it. Thank you!

Hi Aksel,

Thanks for taking responsibility for more Orphaned Profiles. It looks like you are already doing the things recommended by the After Adopting Orphans FAQ. We really appreciate you becoming the caretaker of profiles!

Your comment about my GGGgrandmother, Anne Aarestad- about her last name not her true last name- thank you, and yes, I’m aware of this. I’m actively researching my Norwegian family-Ole’s last name was not Walhood either, same with Sandbeck. Sandbeck is a farm name and I am looking into how Walhood came about.

Aksel, Your comment that my great-grandfather, Amund Dahl, received that surname when he immigrated to the United States is true. His surname in Norway was Snertingdal, the name of the farm in Vestre Gausdal that his father owned.

Thank you, Janice Anderson Horn

On the page for Ales Lauritzsdatter Bratt (abt. 1625 - bef. 1705) you observed: "I strongly doubt that any of these people (except for Lauritz Lauritzen) called themselves Bratt." I agree.

It is interesting that, although I adopted this individual, the WikiTree change log shows me as the originator. I suspect this is an artifact of the way WikiTree works.

But having adopted her, I am responsible to clean up the entry. I will add her to my to do list and clean up when time allows.

Tusen Takk

Thank you for the evidence that Maritte Gautesdatter couldn't have been Gaute Kane's daughter. There are a ton of probably false family connections like that in the old gedcom-imported Norwegian profiles, so any proof for/against the relationships is greatly appreciated!
Hi Aksel!

In July 2019, you made 1000+ (actually, over 1700!) contributions to our Shared Tree! I commend for your time and effort. Keep up the great work!

Hi Aksel,

Congratulations on being Pre-1700 certified!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, coordination is essential. Thanks for joining the Norway Project.
